One thing that helped me a lot when the slave in my '89 died earlier this year was to pry the pressure plate up and use 1-1/8" hex nuts as spacers behind the edges of the pressure plate so I could insert the spacer tool.
That saved a lot of grief. I've tried sawing the slave cylinder in half (using fresh hacksaw blades and Sawzall blades) and it's a royal PITA. Not to mention that it gets metal grit in all sorts of places that you don't want it.
