nah, trev that would defeat the purpose of having an ipod (not ever needing cds again)

you could try cleaning your tape deck but that would be at most marginally better than what you have now.

here's how it works with connecting your ipod:
-tape adapter = BAD sound quality, though it is somewhat convenient
-wireless fm transmitter = better sound quality, depending on area. really something like and itrip or the monster cable fm transmitter (both of which are made to fit an ipod) are a good bet. static shouldn't be a problem if you choose station wisely (i drive thru boston every day without any)
-wired fm transmitter = better sound quality. same idea as wireless one, just connectsd directly to your antenna imput, negating any static problems. installation a bit tricky sometimes
-getting a reciever or eq with an AUX In = very good sound quality. there are a lot of recievers that give you a front or rear imput usually 1/8" (size of headphone plug on ipod), which only requires buying a cheap connector cable to use your ipod.
-buying an ipod capable reciever = best sound quality + coolness factor. there are a few companies (alpine i know imparticular) that have recievers with ipod hookups that allow you to control the ipod with the reciever/see song info on receiver. the problem is that these are pricey, and with a convertable, sound quality isn't going to be that good to justify getting this anyway

so all in all, i'd suggest getting a wireless fm transmitter (which is what i'm using currently) prices are between $25-100 on these. this won't require any installation or getting a new stereo. there are a bunch of ones out there that are good, i use the one from monster cable which charges your ipod at same time, and have had no complaints.

hope this helps,
conor
