It's a long story, but I have a similar decision in front of me. I bought a red '89 900t convertible, a no-rust, good-looking, new top, Florida car, which has a bad engine (very low oil pressure at idle).

As a parts car for the red one, I bought a white '89 900t convertible, with rust, 157k, and enough minor issues that it amounts to at least another major issue. But it runs well, and has a great engine. Which I'm going to swap into the red one.

But I look at the white one and wonder if I can "save" it -- it has severe door rot, but other than that, the rust isn't too bad. Replace the doors, fix some mechanical and cosmetic stuff, and maybe it's OK.

I'm in no hurry, but I'm leaning against it. Rust just doesn't go away. For what it's worth I bought the white one for $1100, and I would not have bought it to fix it and drive it. There's just too much deferred maintenance plus the rust issues.

It feels bad taking a running Saab and parting it out, but at some point the economics can't be ignored. With rust, you have the potential of having to re-do the body work again down the road.

I'm not sure I agree with the $200 assessment -- I have a friend who contends that the value of any running classic 900 is about $1000. That's a bit high, but there are enough unique parts to a convertible that it's surely worth more than $200. (As a matter of fact, if you buy it and part it out, I'd offer nearly that for a working driver's side rear window regulator !).
