No, a catch-can is in-line with the PCV or crankcase vent hose. It's just got more baffles & stuff inside to separate the oil, so the air going into your intake duct is less oily. You drain the oil once in awhile, or maybe hook up a drain tube somewhere?
Similar idea to the oil baffle box on the back of the block on later cars, like 2nd-gen 900 or 1st-gen 9³. Actually there's baffles on the underside of your valve cover to separate oil; a catch-can would go another step further.
