I have seen some cheapie or smoothie SR tires in this size which have almost no reinforcing belts around the sidewall just above the bead seats, whereas something like a BFG Traction TA HR has circumferential belting from the bead seat over half way up the sidewall, so that in effect, this reinforcement makes the tire behave almost like a 205/40 X 17 would. It's also important to look for some extra nylon or aramid reinforcing belts over the steel if you want a real handling tire rather than a silk pillow. I also once dissected a Firestone SR radial with disappointing handling and discovered that the steel belt was only about 3 inches wide down the middle of the tread (on a 175/70 tire) -- the most important parts of the shoulders were completely unreinforced except for the rubber itself. Nowadays I don't buy tires without feeling the sidewalls of a floor sample very carefully.
