the spring can be replaced but i think that it is just at the difficulty point of non DIY. scanwest does it in the car but it takes 3 people to hold all the parts or some such thing. again tho....at 144k and if it was run low...you need to determine if the rest of the car is worth it, the spring probably broke a long time ago and now the band sare worn. you can pull the engine and you can actually buy a rebuild kit for that trans as well. i do ALL my own work ( manual trans rebuilds, engine rebuilds etc) but draw the line at the automatic transmission. if you want to keep the car i'd buy a rebuild from scanwest and put it in yourself or take the plunge and convert to 5-speed. you could probably get aamco to rebuild it as well. the bw37 core was used in american cars as well.
