blinkers stopped working

1985 900t: I recently took off the dash facia to replace a button. I can't see how this would really make a difference as the blinker is located on the steering column but I thought I would just mention it anyway.
When try to turn on either the left or right blinker the same thing happens. no lights on the instument cluster, no blinking sound, just a solid light turns on in the front but nothing in the back. I thought since these work such specific symtoms, someone might have some idea what could be wrong (short, broken circuit, bad part, or otherwise)
any insight would be greatly appreciated, Dave
