programming new remotes for '94 convertible?

Finally found an extra aftermarket remote that will work with my '94 convertible alarm at keylessride.com. (the system works great with my current remote, but I really need a backup!) But they say you either have to take it to the dealer or a local locksmith partner for programming. Is this really true, or does someone using this board know of any 'trade secrets' for programming an extra remote? I know that on my other car's Avital system you can add a remote by flicking a couple of switches somewhere on the main unit, and holding down the remote button. I can't imagine it being much different with earlier, much less advanced alarms.

Any advice would be most welcome before I shell out way too much money for someone else to do the same thing!
