Here’s my $.05 worth (Adjusted for recent fuel gauging):
Synthetic lubricants are the way to go! I’ve been a user of AMSOil (Cars, Trucks, and Motorcycles) since 1982 and will not go back. Today, I use 20-50 Racing AMSOil in my 1989 Saab Turbo Convertible. I purchased the car two years ago with 65k miles on the odometer. As soon as I went over the car and took possession, I droped the fluids and put in 10-40 Mobil 1 in the Crank. As soon as I took possession of my AMSOil delivery I replaced the Mobil 1 with 20-50 Racing AMSOil, 80 weight Synthetic in the Transmission and Front Differential. I opted for a K&N Air and Oil Filter because they were easier to come by then the AMSOil products but please be advised, AMSOil is equal to if not greater than the K&N.
Depending upon how many miles your car has at this point I strongly recommend that you consider using a Para-Synthetic Blend if you have over 60k miles. The Para – will prevent migration path leakage because of the petroleum properties in the make-up of the oil. Run the Para – for six months and keep regular checks for any signs of leakage that may occur. If you can get by without any leaks, then consider going for the 20-50 Strait Racing on the next oil change. The viscosity properties in this oil will work with you in preventing siepage unlike if you were to go synthetic when the car was brand new.
Other than AMSOil, in my humble opinion, Castrol Syntec is the next best thing ahead of Mobile 1. You can get different types of oil viscosities with the Syntec where you can’t with the Mobil 1.
Once you decide to go with the synthetic conversion, pick up a can of AMSOil Engine Cleaner and use it prior to your first oil change. This cleaner will scour your upper and lower engine components for debris and other garbage and will drain out with the oil change. Basically, you add the half pint to your crank case and run it for 10 minutes or so. Here’s a link for AMSOil. http://www.amsoil.com
