Cam position and top dead center

I'm in the reassembly phase of my head gasket change on my 1990 900 non-turbo.
I've set the engine crankshaft at TDC and set the camshafts to their TDC position.
I have the timing chain in the two cam sprockets with no slack in between.
And the chain tensioner is set. (It was at about 9mm, short of the 11mm or greater the Bentley manual indicates is the maximum chain wear), and I did retract it prior to reinstalling it.
Anyway, when I set everything up, the exhaust camshaft is right on the mark, and the mark on the cam sprocket is exactly perpendicular to the cylinder head.
However, the intake camshaft is about 1/16" to the left of the mark. If I move it one notch to try to align it, then it ends up to the right of the mark.
It seems like the cam sprockets and chain wear may be enough to cause this to be slightly off (the car has 246,000 miles on it and this is the original engine and cylinder head - head was pressure tested and planed).
I manually rotated the crankshaft two revolutions, and the cam marks end up in the same position at TDC. There was no noticeable resistance in the rotation.
Is this 1/16" enough to be a problem? Will the car run rough?
Any suggestions and insights would be greatly appreciated.
