Hi pete, Check the brakes carefully, find out if calipers were changed, when?, receipts? etc... See if the car starts well both when hot and cold, a warm-up regulator has gotten expensive lately. Ask if any work was done to the transmission (again: receipts are nice, with mileage at time of repair, even better!) Otherwise drive the car on the highway and listen carefully for gear whine. If you hear a low frequency humming sound, try to turn the wheel a little left and right and see if the noise changes as the weight is transfered from one wheel to the other. This could indicate a bad wheel bearing. Note where the clutch engages (too close to floor is suspiscious) and pump the pedal a few times, if the pedal firms up and engages higher, you will soon need to replace some or all of the hydraulic parts of the clutch. Do a good visual check of the exhaust system: catalytic and bolts, very rusty? Look closely at radiator fins: nice and solid or turning into dust in some areas ? I could go on, but this a start... Good luck !!!
