Assuming that the battery isn't on its last legs, there's a good chance that the alternator ground wire is frayed in some spot that's not easily visible.
If you have a battery charger handy, charge the battery for a few hours. Then, if you have a voltmeter, start the car, turn all of the accessories on, and measure the voltage between the alternator and the negative battery terminal with the RPMs around 1500 or so. If you measure a voltage greater than 0.25 volts or so, then you'll want to replace the ground wire with a 10 gauge (or so) stranded wire. A previous owner of one of my 900s put an 8 ga. wire with 2 huge lugs between the alternator lockbolt and one of the A/C compressor bolts.
Some more possibilities are that the battery has bagged it, that one of the battery cables has lots of corrosion in under the insulation where you can't see it, and that the brushes on the voltage regulator are worn down to their service limit.
How many miles on the alternator?
