I disagree and I think it is a disservice to always desrcibe the auto as lacking when compared to the longivity of a 5 speed. Transmissions that slip out of 2nd and must be held in reverse don't give me a warm and fuzzy. Of course, autos can have their own set of issues. However, to lay claim that an auto at 120K is on it's last legs is totally incorrect.
I suspect both transmissions have their negatives and positives whether they are well maintained or not.
Otherwise, I agree that an inspection by a SAAB mech is sound advice.
As they say, caveat emptor.
