Paint: Fine Scratch Removal

I recently washed my Black 98 900 SE Turbo (175k) with the green abrasive face of one of those yellow square sponges often found in the kitchen. The result was that fine swirling scratches now mar areas of the formerly lustrious finish. Looks almost cloudy in those spots. After re-washing the car, this time with a chamois clothe (!), I applied auto wax, supposedly containning "scratch removel" properties. It did nothing to the fine scratches. A guy at Maaco said a good auto detailer could perhaps buff the scratches out and then apply a clear coat layer. This would likely look better than a new paint job and be much less expensive. The original paint on this, now third hand car was remarkably glossy. I was amazed to discover, after yet another wash, that the application of Ultra Shine protective Wipes made the scratches totally invisible! This happened yesterday and the weather's been good so no appreciable rain has fallen on the car. The scratches are still not visible in the tested area but I've been told that's probably temporary.
What does all this reveal about possible restoration methods? Also, might anybody recommend a Washington DC area detailer who's good value in doing this kind of work. I live in Potomac, MD.
