>>Mobil got everyone into 3000 mile oil changes for self serving purposes. Most owners manuals (the real standard) recommend much more, usually between 5000 and 10,000 miles.<<
Actually it was a government mandate that required manufacturers to recommend longer oil change intervals. There is usually a "under ideal conditions" caveat in the Owners Manual, and more frequent changes were the true recommendation.
However, better quality oil and modern engine metallurgy DO allow for longer intervals between oil changes. Synthetics can go longer, but cost a lot more, so there is little saving of $$ in the long run.
Keep an eye on the color of the oil... the main reason for frequent changes is contamination of the oil from heat and hard-service driving (stop-and-go, turbos, etc.) I change the oil on my Saabs more by oil color and engine sound. If there is a little ticking from the lifters on startup, I know it's time to change. Using those indicators, I change about every 5000 miles.
I switched to Castrol High-Mileage about a year ago and have been quite happy with the results. No need to add oil between changes despite over 260,000 miles on my '85 900 8v. And the oil stays cleaner for a longer period of time.
