Latest inspection nightmare! Need brake help. Posted by devin [Email] (#2469) [Profile/Gallery] (more from devin) on Sat, 26 Nov 2005 13:28:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I put 7K on my car since last year's inspection. Figured everything was solid so I took the car to a no appointment necessary place when I was visiting my dad on Friday to try to get an inspection before going back to school. Guy gave me an estimate close to $1000. I know I needed the two new tires, but the rest of it seemed insane.
The good news-- passed PA smog. I tuned it up and changed the 02 sensor last year. This was a relief given the story's I've been hearing.
The bad news--
Guys says I need new front shocks because the lower bushings are shot. Car's got 138K and the shocks aren't original. It rides great. I can replace JUST the bushings, right?
Also says I need rear pads and rotors too. Haven't looked yet because it's 20 degrees here, but last time the wheels were off everything looked O.K. No noise, no vibration when I pull the e-brake, and the car stops straight even in the rain. Finally, said one of the e-brake cables needs to be replaced because it's sticking. Despite that the e-brake works fine. Can this be cleaned up and lubed? I thought it could, but guy said no.
Haven't messed with brakes except for rear drums on an old VW rabbit. Figure it's time to buy that $30 impact driver from Sears.
Any other tips on rear brake R&R?
Thanks,
Devin
