Saab "born from jets"? It's not true. But first, some grammar: "Borne" is the past tense of "to bear," as in, "to give birth." So, more accurately, Saab, the car company, was borne from WWII prop planes. GM might have also, and also incorrectly, claimed that Saab was "borne from trucks and buses," as Scania played a big role in turbocharging Saab cars. But getting back to the truth part: Saab cars and Saab jets have had nothing to do with each other for quite some time. The only thing borne is yet another tepid marketing campaign: does anyone really believe that a rebadged Impreza or Blazer benefited from a team of aeronautical engineers borrowed from the jet plane offices just down the hall?

I would still consider purchasing a 9-5 or a 4-cylinder 9-3SS (but not the Subaru or the SUV). And my reasons for buying a newer Saab would be different than the older ones (I own & have owned several). My expectations would be different, too (lower).

Saab used to be a technology-driven company that focused on meshing safety, performance, and practicality. Now they are a essentially a badge. Yes, I know, I might be branded a heathen and kicked off the island, but if you sample the perceptions of other car guys who aren't Saab owners, they differ wildly from what we, the Saab converted, see: they see a company whose technological expertise has been borrowed, then its creators sacked; they see cars without distinguishing features or performance; they distrust the marque as "hiding" a lousy GM car beneath its skin; and they see one unconvincing or silly ad campaign after another, starting with Find Your Own Road. (How, exactly, does one find one's own road by driving a mass-produced product from one of the world's largest industrial corporations, and what should one do if one was unfortunate enough to glance in the mirror to see that someone else had found the same road?)

I digress. Why should anyone care about these perceptions? Because unless you dispel the inaccuracies that color them, they are considered TRUTH.

So, in the end, has GM been good for Saab? Who knows? They're still here, right? But they're only just hanging on. GM should give some autonomy back to Saab - like Ford and Volvo's relationship - and let them do their own thing. They have a new guy from Cadillac, right? The one who resurrected them?

And on an unrelated note, GM should bring the 9-3 diesel to the U.S. - I think the market is ready.
