On my '86 ( may be different in an '88), the temp sender is below the distributor on front of cylinder head and has one wire clipped to it.
According to Bentley, you can check the function of the sender by disconnecting the wire from the sender and hold it to ground ( against engine) and turn the ignition on. If the temp gauge moves up, the sender is faulty. If the gauge doesn't move, the wiring is bad or the gauge is faulty.
