Without seeing first-hand, I can't help thinking that you've pulled out the entire cylinder assembly and nothing is left to remove. On the inside of the external core (that which doesn't pull out) are two channels facing across from each other that run the length of the inside from top to bottom. Their purpose is for the tumblers to keep the ignition from turning without the key inserted. When the key is inserted, the tumblers pull free from those two slots, thus allowing the core to turn and start the car.
