Front wheels pointing in different directions??!?

Hello all,
I just got a call at work from my girlfriend. Apparently she was backing out of her driveway in her '89 900s and one of the front wheels turned itself in the opposite direction from the other one. I'm not there to see it, so I don't know exactly what happened. We were going to bring it to ABJ in somerville tonight to address what I thought was a bad CV joint and a hot-running issue. What would cause the front wheels to split like this? The tie-rod ends? I've never heard of this happening to a 900. Also, apparently a mechanic was nearby and looked at her car. She said there was no structural rot... very strange. Thanks in advance for all of your input.
Jesse
