I owned a 1985 Nissan 300ZX (bought new and sold it last year) that was never driven in the winter (I would "store" it from Oct thru May). I purchased an Evolution-type car cover for it from the dealer (factory made for that car), and parked it outside during storage. The car was still in the same condition when I sold it as it was when I drove it out of the showroom (am still regretting letting it go...).
I purchased my 900T convertible in '03 from Atlanta, GA, where it was never subjected to the elements as they are here in CT. That baby is parked outside year-round, and still shines like the day I adopted it. I always make sure to brush the snow off the top whether using it or not that day, and yes, I do drive it in the winter.
So, in comparison, I see no difference whether a car is covered or not.
