Richard, there are numerous possibilities here and only some closer examination will pinpoint the problem so here are some questions and suggestions. How's the oil condition and level? Any metal chunks on the magnetic drain plug? When you say that the gears are selecting nicely I suppose that you mean the shift lever clicks into its "gates" and stays put. If it was me I'd work backwards like this; Chock rear wheel, let off handbrake, put car in fifth gear. Now jack up one front wheel and turn it by hand. That should make the engine turn. You may have to remove the spark plugs but usually you'll get at least a little movement before you hit compression. If the engine doesn't turn (and I think we already don't expect that) pop the clutch shaft cover off and see if the clutch shaft turns when the wheel is turned. If yes, then you must have a clutch failure. If no, then back out the clutch shaft and see if it's broken. If it's good then push it back and remove the forward side cover plate (right side) and inspect the gear teeth in there. Then see if the sleeve that couples the main cluster to it's front gear is slid forward. If yes then you've found the problem. This usually happens when the coupler is installed backwards and can sometimes be fixed by sliding the coupler back and placing the snap ring properly then wiring the snap ring ends together so that it can not escape its groove again. If the coupler is in place then see if the front counter gear turns when the wheel is turned. If no then you have one of three problems: 1)stripped splines on a companion flange (where it plugs into the diff. bevel gear) which is a surprisingly common problem. 2)Damaged gears- which you can't fix in situ or 3)busted differential bevel gears-which you can fix in situ (but it's a bitch). There are other possibilities like a broken mainshaft but that is nearly unheard of. Let us know what you find. Good luck.
