What am I giving up with a 82 degree thermostat?

This is on a 91 900NA with 180k miles. I have always used the 82 degree thermostat as per the recommendation from this board and Townsend in order to protect the head gasket. I had to take the head off because of a burned valve and everything looks really good. I'm doing the 30k miles service at the same time and was ready to put in a new 82 degree thermostat. Which made me think about the OEM 89 degree. I understand the rationale for going with a colder one, but what is the drawback? With an 89, would I have more power, better fuel mileage, cleaner emissions? Are there any advantages or was the 89 an acknowledged factory mistake?
