90 900T no start- ideas?

I picked up a 90 900T 3dr 5spd recently that I drove home, but it run kind of sluggish. But it was very cheap. Took it home about a month ago, and has not restarted since.
New parts- cap and rotor, proper NGK plugs (had Bosch), fuel filter, fresh gas, battery.
Used parts swapped in- fuel pump (did the jumper thing, it runs), fuel pump relay, fuel press regulator (2), plug wires, checked fuses, coil, ignition amp (correct one),
Tests- plugs have appeared wet, prev Bosch plugs showed an orange spark
The car was a very hard starter when I picked it up, but it did at least run. Now I get an occasional "pop", like a backfire. I am guessing maybe the timing is way off? I moved the distributor a few degrees in either way, to no avail.
My fear that the crank sensor is bad, or possibly the timing. A Saab tech told me today that the green/white wire to the coil was sometimes crimped incorrectly leading to low voltage to the coil and there was a service bulletin on it. I am poring through Bentley for other ideas. Do I need to get out the multimeter and start testing things? :( IF so... what is most likely to be the culprit?
Ideas are appreciated... this was supposed to be my winter beater!
thanks
