Depending on the year of your car, this is most likely (eating humble pie here) the oil feeder tubes that feed oil to the cam bearings/lifters. I replaced mine last weekend, and after 5 minutes the sound went away, after 20 minutes, was gone completely. You can buy the fittings individually from one site sponsor and the whole kit at another. Cost me like $23.
I really doubted this would solve my problem, but it did....... Doesnt make sense to me, but it works. Here is what I did.
1. Remove valve cover & clean/replace w/ new gasket.
2. Remove and replace fittings on tube
3. Replace upper timing chain pad in valve cover (also available at site sponsor)
4. Reassemble/install valve cover
5. Start car, pour 1 quart Marvel Mystery Oil into engine oil.
6. Let car idle for 20 minutes or untill cooling fan cycles. This will allow the MMO to free sticky things. ALL my clatter went away in less than 20 minutes.
7. While running, I did the 1/3 seafoam into the intake, 1/3 into the gas and saved 1/3 for the coming oil change.
8. Shut car off, change oil and filter, add remaining seafoam to oil.
9. SMILE & drink your beer of choice (Shiner-Bach thank you)
I was AMAZED at how quiet the engine now is. It sounded like a deisel before. Cost me about $50 total. I was worried about wear, and diddnt know how long the car had been this way as I've only owned it for a month, But saw no wear on cam lobes. Did notice however that one lobe is taller than the other on all intake valves. Interesting... Dont remember the exhaust side.
Easy fix.
