if you have expensive bikes, the safest place is the back seat with the wheels removed or put them in the trunk. i always carry mtn bikes and kayak on top but my titanium road bike stays in. i've seen bikes get crunched when they're riding on a hitch or fall off from those trunk mounted cheap racks. one guy showed up at a race and didn't know that his bike had fallen off.
i've seen a bike riding on the passenger side of a vert with the front wheel removed, the fork was mounted on a home-made quick release mount the owner designed. it was unique.
