There was a test done a long time ago (wish I could remember who) where they put completely dry, clean CV's on a car with NO BOOTS OR GREASE at all. It turned out that they ran some ridiculously long time without a problem. They figured out that without boots or grease any water or contaminant like dirt or grit was washed out completely as fast as it got in. The point is; If your boot has a tear then bad stuff gets in and mixes with the grease and can't get out so it just grinds away at the joint. So as long as your boots are good and untorn you shouldn't have a problem. So it's most important to check the condition of your boots frequently. I've always had good luck with just dis-assembling , cleaning and re-assembling outer CVs with fresh high pressure grease and new OEM boots. Seems to make them like new. I (myself) really wouldn't buy a complete remanufactured axle but I'm into doing that job that I just described and some folks aren't. Remanufactured axles (CVs) have been reground (see an earlier post of mine for a description of that process) and so it matters who is doing the rebuilding. The quality control there can be pretty sketchy. As for inner CVs; when the companion flange develops pockets on it's drive faces then you either swap left for right (only works once btw) or toss it and replace with new (and do the tripod bearing too). The axle shaft itself is pretty sturdy. As long as it's splines are good the only reason to replace it is that you want to see if the axle rebuilder is going to give you the wrong length one so you can have the same thrill ride as some recent poster's on this site. Cheers
