I've used the same oil just fine in my 88 900T. I pumped it out through the gearbox dipstick hole. Then I didn't need to change any gaskets/washers or anything.

Check the hoses and belts. Vacuum hoses too, but not so critical since it's not a turbo. Check to make sure the radiator fans come on OK. Wouldn't suprise me if the spark plugs had been neglected too. New NGKs are cheap.
