I have a '90 SPG also. Your original compressor is probably one with a brass-colored "blow-off-valve" (P/N 40 70 835) on the end with the ports. On my car the valve was leaking, found one in junk yard that was good (still had pressure in system), put it into my compressor. The system is working for the 4th year now using the R12 they put into it in 2003. Is your valve all that is bad, or is the compressor really shot?
I cannot tell by the Part Numbers in the EPC, but I think if you get one with the "valve" from '90 to '93 ('94 CV) you should be fine. I asked at a junk yard one time, and I think I was told '86 and newer were right, but I know the older ones didn't have the valve on them. Maybe that's a good thing?

So - With a valve = good; Without a valve as old as '86 = maybe.
