Is this transmission toast?

(I hate automatic transmissions!)
I've had this 93 900S (142K) sitting around largely undriven for the last few months and am fixing to sell it. When I drove it today after a long hiatus, it shifts into 2nd smoothly. But, the revs go up & up without shifting into 3rd when accelerating. However, if I back off on the gas and then tap the accelerator, it goes smoothly into gear, runs just fine at higher speeds.
I did take it by my local shop where they changed the oil and checked all levels - everything looks fine, they said.
So, since I'm about to sell this thing, what do I tell prospective buyers? I don't think I can get an accurate diagnosis without the tranny being taken apart, am I correct?
I neither want to scare off people if it's something maybe, sorta minor, but if it's toast, then I need to sell it as such.
Thank you!
Oh PS, I do not have service records on this car; I've owned it for less than 2 years and don't know the history.
