WOW! We're rookies at this saab engine thing, we've worked on the transmission, but not the engine! The problem was first, when my husband drove it to work, about 8 miles into the trip, the car would just turn off in mid-drive. Later, he could go back and turn the car on, no problem, and come home.
We checked for vacuum leaks, there were none. The car has an upshifting late problem that we KNOW, but we hope this is unrelated.
So we changed the spark plug wires, new plugs, and finally figured out the firing order, changed the oil and the oil filter, started right up, but was "tapping" under the engine lid.
So we called this fantastic friend we have that's a saab mechanic, and he said we have a bad lifter or two. Luckily we have a "parts saab" so we took the good lifters out of that one, and replaced the bad lifters in ours. BUT NOW, we can't get the engine put back together, because we can't depress the timing chain tensioner!!!
How do we do this???
One more thing, before I close this engine back up, the "gear" wheels (that the chain rotates) are supposed to be set to a specific point before the chain goes on, right? There's a little line on the wheel, and a notch on the cam, on both of our saabs, these little indicator notches are about 1/2 inch off of lined up. Is this supposed to be like this? How do you "time" the engine correctly? My husband said that if we don't get it right we could bust the chain and bend the lifters (which doesn't seem possible, they're so short and "shafty").
In conclusion (and thanks for reading this whole thing) how do we depress the chain tensioner so we can get the chain back on, and how do we "time" the engine? Please call us at 574-234-7938 if you're an expert at this, we're sunk, and we need this car to get to work!
Thanks, Allyson and Aaron
