BTDC = Before Top Dead Center, usually referring to TDC of cylinder number one, when the piston reaches the top of its travel in the chamber during the compression stroke, that's TDC.
BTDC is therefore how much time before TDC do you start the ignition process.
Everyone will chime in with their own opinions on their favourite methods to check timing. I prefer to do it in the evening, when the sun doesn't interfere with my vision as much when looknig for the timing marks on the flywheel.
Have you found the place in the plastic clutch cover where to observe the marks?
