What I did to my '89, in chrono order was:
3.0 bar FPR - $5 at junkyard
Modified APC - $4 + 45 minutes work
Timing advance mod - free
Timing adjust - free

I get boost to 3/4 red which tapers to about 1/3 - 1/2 red

I've got an SMIC that I want to change the pipes on so they mate with the original boots and have been thinking of checking out Jak's chips as well.
