I wonder how much of a mechanic he is, if he think it is such a hardship to remove the belts and crank pulley to get access to the sensor there.
Yes, the sensor is quite pricey ($251.00) but someone on either this or the 9000 board mentioned a universal sensor that could be spliced into the harness for a lot less money.
I haven't heard of anyone going back to the older ignition distributor but it might be possible since the Hall effect system (I guess) is the same.
Me personally, I wouldn't do it due to the uncertainty of if it works and having to manufacture a wire harness from the plug down at starter up to the ignition distributor.
