Lights dim? Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 92 900s live power but not to starter, Mike W, Mon, 1 May 2006 09:57:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
When you go to the start position, do the headlights and accessory lights dim out, or do they stay on?
If they dim out, I would suspect either the battery charge is low, or the battery cables/clamps. Make sure the battery has a decent charge. If it does, pull the battery clamps off, and polish up the contacts between the inside of the clamp and the outside of the battery post. All it takes is a little oxide buildup there - the resistance is low enough to allow the accessories to work, but the voltage drop will be massive with the hundreds of amps the starter takes.
If the lights don't dim, do you hear a click from the starter area? If you do, the starter solenoid may be bad. The solenoid is really just a big relay; not only does it push the starter into place, it makes the connection from the starter motor to the battery. If that connection gets gummed up, the starter won't get current.
Lastly, from what I can tell, that car has an starter inhibit as part of the burglar alarm. At a minimum, lock the car up and then unlock it with the key, making sure the alarm LED goes away. If that doesn't do it, it may be a bad Starter Inhibit relay.
