Wrong AMM used and now car runs terribly bad. Need help Posted by scott47 [Email] (#119) [Profile/Gallery] (more from scott47) on Sat, 20 May 2006 14:18:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I recently acquired a 1987 900 turbo which has 154K+ miles. The idle speed jumped all over the place when the car was running (warm or cold). I started by checking all of the vacuum lines and replacing the ones that were or looked like they might be broken. This didn't help as the car still idled very very bad.
Next I decided to swap out the air mass meter with a unit that I know is good (from my 1989 900 turbo). The problem is I didn't realize that even though they look very similar and use the same plug they are not compatible. Apparently the '87 uses a LH2.2 system while the '89 uses a LH2.4 system.
The problem is now the car idles perfectly (900-1000 rpm) but runs terribly bad. Stepping on the gas will usually kill the engine. I've been able to find posts that confirm using the LH2.4 system in a LH2.2 system can damage the ECU but no posts that explain how to verify that this has happened.
Is there any way to check the ECU to determine if this is the problem? If that is the problem is there any way to repair the ECU or do I need to head out to the junk yards hoping to find one (they are apparently very expensive new or rebuilt)?
Any ideas, thoughts or suggestions will be very greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!!
Scott
