A few things you didn't mention -
1. Is the BATTERY light on? If you turn the key to ON but don't start the car, do you see the BATTERY light, and then it goes out (or doesn't) when the engine starts?
If the BAT light is on all the time, I'd suspect the VR, after first making sure the belts aren't slipping (or missing).
If the BAT light never comes on, even with the key in ON and the engine off, I'd suspect either a blown BAT light or a bad wire from the light to the alternator (thin yellow or green wire on the back). That circuit is necessary for the alternator to work.
If the BAT light is working as it should (ON with key ON, car off, goes off when the engine starts), I'd do two things-
First, measure the voltage on the battery terminals when the engine is running. If it's over 13 volts, the alternator is doing its job.
Second - check the ground to the alternator. Measure the voltage from the alternator case to chassis with the engine running. It should be less than 0.05 volts. If more than that, fix the alternator ground wire.
It might be a bad VR, followed (possibly) by a bad diode in the alternator. But the big question - BAT light? Voltage? We can go from there, because you could also be having issues with cable, cable clamps, grounds, and even the ignition key.
