it's not that these cars are known to rust it's just that these things are 17 yrs old now & if it was driven on salty roads for much of it's life rust will probably be present.
The places for rust are
bottom of doors - open up door & look at bottom under map pocket
rear fender above wheels - they can get bubbles there. you will know if you see it :)
Above the front wheels especially the passenger side can rust. You pop the hood & look where the front quarter panel meets the top of the wheel area.
Then you have the control arm area which can rust
all are a PITA to fix $$$$$
AC, like mentioned above live w/o it if you can, they just never work right :(
expect to pay $2000-3000 for a new trans in the future, it WILL let loos on you one of these days :(
Before you buy it & if it's something that you like you realls should have a saab tech inspect the car. They will be able to tell you exactly what is needed & it's usually $60-100 for the inspection, TOTALLY worth it!!!!
