With lean running, I wouldn't expect to smell gas in the exhaust. In fact, if you do smell raw fuel in the exhaust, I'd expect either rich running or one cylinde where the spark plug isn't firing. That would be VERY rough. And the raw fuel will destroy the catalytic convertor very quickly.
First things first - pull the spark plugs - they live in the engine and will tell you what is going on. Do they look rich (black and fluffy), lean (white) or just right (light grey). Raw fuel on any of them? Are all the plugs the same, or does one cylinder look different? Replace the plugs if they look old, and make sure the gap is correct.
If you're running lean and the car doesn't idle well, I'd immediately suspect a vacuum leak. Check all your vacuum lines for broken or cracked hoses.
but check those plugs as the very first step.
