I've owned several pre 87 900s, never had a problem. I could lock up the wheels and do a panic stop no problem. You just have to look after them, and if they're giving you trouble (sticking, leaking, etc) replace them.
Oh, and get good pads too. I had a 91 turbo for a while, certainly didn't feel like it stopped better than my '86. Just my 2 cents.
