Patching the Convertible Top - Silicone? Or....?

My 94 cabrio has a few small holes in the C pillar. I am not too worried about cosmetic appearance but I want to patch them up for now so it wont leak.
What is the best thing to use? I have seen a few old cabrios with globs of Silicone in the holes. Does this work effectively?
Any recommendations? And what is the roof made of - I know its cloth but Polyester, Nylon, what??
Thanks
