Unfortunately without having the thing together, it's really impossible to tell without fairly expensive equipment what went wrong. If you're determined on putting it back together, I would take the head to a local machine shop - they can test the surface, valves, valves guides, and seals quite readily, and very accurately.
There are specs for the piston/ring/cylinder tolerances - I don't know them offhand, but they are in the Bentley manual IIRC - again, you'll need specialized testing gear.
Others may disagree with my advice, but IMHO you can surely find a cheap junkyard motor somewhere and slam it in that car for far less than you'll spend trying to figure out what went wrong & repairing it. Just find a car that's been hit - that way you'll know it was driven until it died.
