I have been having a little bit of trouble with my 1992 900S for the last little bit. Every few days or so it refuses to start and stays dead until it decides to start some random number of days later. When it starts, it runs beautifully. Also, by dead I mean not firing. The engine cranks and all the electronics come on, but no firing. I have begun to work through the diagnostics with the aid of my Bentley manual and this board, and have established that the fuel pump runs via the fuse-jumping method, power and knock sensor signal are making it to the EZK box, and the starting coil is good. Spark plugs and distributor are all new.
So, to come to the main point of this message, I was quite puzzled this evening while driving the 900. It started up just fine and I took it to run an errand about 8 miles away from home. Going over the trip was fine and I left the car running while I ran into take care of the errand. On the way home (about halfway there), I was cruising along at 50mph in 5th gear when the car just stopped firing. There was no jerk or warning, the engine just stopped firing and the Check Engine light came on. I continued to roll along for about 5 seconds and then the engine just restarted and ran perfectly the rest of the way home. As soon as the engine restarted, the Check Engine light went off and remained off for the remainder of the trip.
I would greatly appreciate any thoughts you might have on what might be wrong or where to start looking (I was thinking the problem was electrical and not fuel related, but don't know).
