900 Turbo Manual Transmission question

I recently purchased a 900 turbo conv and its a manual tranny.
in order to go into 5th gear, you have to lift up the collar as you do when you're placing the car in reverse. Is this normal? If I don't lift up the collar and try to go to 5th the engine stalls which is kind of scary.
Also, I thought the key is locked until you place the shifter in reverse, in mine I can remove the key anytime.
Is something really wrong or about to go wrong that I can catch?
Thanks for any info!!
