If that's the only gauge with a problem, I think it's likely to be a fault either with the temperature transmitter or with the wire connection at the transmitter. The transmitter is located on the rear of the engine ( front of car) near the thermostat and has a single wire connected to it - the connector is a female clip that fits over the pin at the transmitter, not a very secure connection. If the connection is okay, maybe it's the transmitter itself that's faulty.
