Hey all... thank you for all of your earlier posts... ive been reading and find them helpful and interesting. Here's my situation...

I just bought a 1991 naturally aspirated 900 5-speed with 162000 miles. Car had a clutch job in 9/05. Didnt notice any troubling sounds when I test drove it... but did notice a vibration (hard to locate) in all gears when accelerating (kind of a low heavy vibration). My buddy didnt seem concerned and he has a 900 so that put my mind at ease somewhat and i bought it. Since then... only a 1000 miles or so... I have noticed the following in addition to that vibration... there is a whine in all gears upon accelerating and deccelerating that is absent with clutch disengaged (coasting) and at idle (it does seem to idle a tad heavy) The noise is distinctly different in 5th gear where I get a constant musical note of relatively high pitch but not as high as the whine as I go up through the other gears. There is no difficulty at all getting into any of the gears including 5th and reverse... the car shifts very smoothly. The lever you pull to get in reverse is broken... but that does not affect the ease of entering any of the gears.. just dont need to pull up to get in reverse.

After reading a lot of the posts... my heart is haunted by the thought of this being a pinion bearing problem (sound characteristics, all gears while acc and deacc, 5th gear noise). Are there other possible explanations and what is recommended. I am going to change the tranny oil and see if that helps. Should I drive it till it breaks... or does it save me time and money to get this fixed now... assuming it is the pinion bearing? Money is an issue now. Any thoughts on diagnosis, treatment and cost of treatment? Thanks much! Im a newbie to the saab world and dont know much about cars. I appreciate all that is done by posters to help us who dont know out! Love the saab... was just hoping a cracked dash was the worst of my problems ;)
