It has been my experience that even trusted mechanics have been known to up and estimate when in need of extra cash. The one I use to use try to quote me almost 1000 dollars for a clutch change in my wife's 900S. He tried to tell me you had to pull the tranny off to do it and all sorts of stuff. After just a little research, and a trip to this board, I found that he was way off base. I have a new mechanic now and I did the clutch job myself. I do try to do as much as I can DIY largely becasue I enjoy doing it, but sometimes time doesn't allow it.
My new mechanic knows up front that I research every quote so he won't try this.
Good luck!
