Sorry to hear about this. I agree to give the rust a hard look - ball joints, suspension and chassis members, exhaust, etc. How is engine health? You can get a screw-in compression tester for ~$25 USD or less (do a dry and wet) - it will give a rough guide (more/different testing will reveal more). Has the head gasket been replaced?
