In order to replace the second gear synchro balk ring you must disassemble the tranny just to the point where the pinion housing is taken out and that's the last thing that comes out of the case during a complete rebuild. To pull the second gear unit off of the mainshaft you must get the cluster gear out of the way and that means dropping out the final drive so that you can withdraw the layshaft. So you might as well do a complete rebuild. Getting that far in and not replacing the pinion bearings would be very short-sighted unless they were replaced quite recently (which begs the question: why weren't the balk rings checked?). So consider how many miles are on your tranny, pinion bearings are typically good for about 150,000 miles (regardless of whether they are pre '89 or '89>). If they are close to 100,000 miles and you are going to keep the car then best to replace them. By the way, what causes more first and second gear engagement problems is not so much the balk rings but more commonly the 1-2 shift fork. They wear like crazy and then fail to throw the synchro muff sufficiently. Three-four shift forks don't seem to wear hardly at all (go figure, maybe it's the moly coating). You can rebuild that tranny without unbolting it from the engine (takes a stout bench). I've seen guys do it and it saves the engine to tranny gasket cost ($12) and maybe 30-40 minutes of labor but it's impossible to clean the case thoroughly (so another 30-60 minutes saved) and I'm not recommending that technique.
