I had a non turbo 2.1 and had the crankshaft position sensor come loose, and get all banged up. THe engine ran on two cylinders while fuel just washed into the cylinders that weren't firing, and continued to dilute the oil in the sump. The unburned gas that was pushed into the exhaust was then igniting and then when the car lost more power I pulled over to open the hood and see that the cast iron manifold was cherry red and glowing bright! The car was filled with the contents of two college dorm rooms which was why I thought the car had little power.
